All manuscripts submitted to STEM must address the implications and applications of research in English teaching and learning through movies, TV dramas, and other media. In the case of research on linguistics and literature, it must be relevant to using movies or multimedia.

 

 

 

STEM invites submissions in the following areas:

 

. Theory and its application in English teaching and learning through multimedia

 

. English teaching and learning through movies and TV dramas

 

. Teaching methodology with multimedia

 

. Teaching English linguistics and literature through movies and TV dramas

 

 

 

In addition, they must present original insights in the field as manuscripts that have not been previously published elsewhere.

 

 

 

Submissions must include a two hundred word abstract and at least three key words (Indicate the word count in parentheses.). Send one electronic copy of the manuscript to the editor using MS word (ver.2003 or higher version) as attachment. In the accompanying paper, please specify the author’s manuscript title, name, address, phone number (home, office, and cell phone), fax number, and email address.

 

Submissions should not exceed 25 pages in length including references (at least 15 pages). The manuscript should be written on A4 paper. APA style is used for text, references, and notes. Detailed style guidelines, including examples, are available on the STEM web site: www.stemedia.co.kr

 

 

 

1. The manuscript style

 

1) Margins and Line Spacing

 

The left and right margins should be 4.2 cm; the top margin 5 cm, bottom margin 5.2 cm; the top header, 4.2 cm; the bottom header, 1 cm. The line spacing of the title, the main text, and the reference list should be set to 14.5-point, while that of the abstract should be set to 12.5-point, and footnotes should be set to 10-point.

 

 

 

2) Font and size

 

title: 14-point Arial font

 

main text: 10-point Times New Roman font

 

abstract: 9-point Times New Roman font

 

footnote: 8-point Times New Roman font

 

reference: 10-point Times New Roman font

 

 

 

The submission due dates are as follows.

2. Other Important Guidelines

 

1) Manuscripts will be acknowledged by the editor upon receipt. STEM Journal uses the blind review system. Articles submitted will be sent to three reviewers whose area of expertise includes the subject of the manuscript. The manuscript will be rated by reviewers as “publish without revisions,” “publish with revisions,” “revise and submit for reevaluation,” or “reject.” The writer will be informed of whether the article will be published or not about a month after the submission deadline.

 

2) The correction of the manuscript proof will be the responsibility of the author.

 

3) The author must pay a small amount of the printing fee for publication. If the total page number exceeds the standard total page number, the author must pay an extra 10, 000 won per page.

Paper Submission Guidelines

 

The STEM journal is published three times a year, in February, August and November. The deadline for submissions for each issue is three months ahead of the publication month.

The submission due dates are as follows.

(3) issue 3: August 31 (for November 30 publication)

 

All manuscripts for STEM journal must follow APA style (6th ed.) specifications.

Article 1 Submission Qualification: Submission of the manuscript is allowed for the Society for Teaching English through Media members only.

 

Article 2 Content

Topics and contents should be related to a theory of teaching English and acquisition and its practice in the classroom through using various multimedia and movies. The article of adjacent studies such as English linguistics or literature should contain the educational and pedagogical implications in language learning and teaching through movies and multimedia.

 

Article 3 Specifications for English Manuscripts

1. The manuscript should be prepared using a word processor (ver. 2003 or higher version).

2. Manuscripts should be typed on A4-size paper. The length of the manuscript should not exceed 25 pages of the STEM journal (when exceeding this limit, 10,000 Won per extra page needs to be paid by the author).

3. The margin spaces will be 50mm (up), 52mm (down), 42mm (left & right), 0 cm (binding), 42mm (top header), and 10mm (bottom header).

4. The abstract should be approximately 200 words (Please indicate how many words are included in the abstract in parenthesis at the end of the abstract).

5. The title of the article should not exceed two lines. If the title has more than two lines, it should be reduced to two lines.

6. All manuscripts should be typed with Times New Roman font in the title, footnote, and abstract and Arial font in the subheadings. Each level of headings is formatted as follows:

-Level 5 (title): 14pt, bold

-Level 4: 12pt, bold

-Level 3, 2, 1: 11pt, bold

Format for the manuscript is as follow:

-Main text: 10pt, 14.5-point line spacing

-Abstract: 9pt, 12.5-point line spacing

-Footnote: 8pt, 10-point line spacing

-A list of references: 10pt, 14.5-point line spacing, 35pt left indentation

7. The subheadings should be numbered in the following manner.

  e.g., I.  1.  1)  (1)   ①

8. There should be a line after every subheading except the fourth level (e.g.,(1)) and the fifth level (e.g.,①)

9. No subheadings should be indented.

10. The main text should be indented 10pt at the beginning of each paragraph.

11. Korean words cannot be mingled with English ones for a reference, a title, or any other information. English words need to be used or Korean words should be romanized.

12. A list of references, tables, and figures should conform to the style of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.).

13. A list of references should be made using reverse indentation. For a book, the place of publication and the publisher should be provided. When citing an article or a chapter in an edited book, include its page numbers. When citing a revised book, cite the edition with Arabic numerals in parentheses.

14. The Korean book title should be italicized in the list of references.

15. In a list of references, single-author citations precede multiple-author citations.

16. If the article is co-authored and equally contributed, names of co-authors should be provided in a footnote on the first page of the manuscript. If unequally contributed to the article, the primary and secondary author should be distinguished as follows:

* Co-authors: Lee, Young-Sang; Kim, Young-Uh

Primary author: Lee, Young-Sang; Secondary author: Kim, Young-Uh

17. Authors must acknowledge grants received and place it in a footnote on the first page of the manuscript.

18. "Applicable levels" and "Keywords" should be 9pt, Times New Roman, left aligned.

* Applicable levels: elementary education, secondary education

Keywords: games, motivation

19. On the last page of the manuscript, the author should provide the author’s name, affiliation, mailing address, home/office phone number(s), fax number(s), email address, and cell phone number(s).

Article 5 Other Important Regulations

1. When a Korean author’s name is romanized, the first name is written before the last name (e.g., Kil-Dong Hong) for a title; the last name is followed by a comma and first name (e.g., Hong, Kil-Dong) for an abstract and table of contents.

2. All the manuscripts submitted will undergo a strict editorial process. Following evaluation, they will be accepted, rejected, or returned for revision.

3. The author is responsible for revisions of the manuscript for publication.

4. Publication of more than two articles article by the same writer per year is not allowed in principle.

5. The expenses for publication will be paid by the contributors.

6. The length of the manuscript should not exceed 25 pages of STEM journal (when exceeding this limit, 10,000 Won per extra page needs to be paid by the author).

7. A certificate verifying that the paper will be published in STEM journal can be issued upon request, after the final decision for publication is made by the Editorial Committee.

8. The author of the published article will receive two complimentary copies of the STEM Journal.

9. The copyright of the paper and digital version of the article belongs to the STEM.

 

 

 

APA Style Guidelines

 

All submissions to STEM journal should conform to the requirements of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). The following are some important examples taken from the manual.

 

1. Text Citation

 

1) In-text citations

Materials (fewer than 40 works) directly quoted from the other author's work should be enclosed by the double quotation marks. Single quotation marks can be used for a keyword and another quoted materials in the double quotation marks. Period is placed after the reference citation in text as shown in the example. The author's last name, year of publication, and specific page numbers are placed in the parentheses.

 

Quotation 1) the case that the author is not named in the signal phrase

He stated, "The 'placebo effect' disappeared... when behaviors were studied in this manner" (Smith, 1982, p. 276).

 

Quotation 2) the case that the author is named in the signal phrase

Smith (1982) found that "the ‘placebo effect’ disappeared when [his own and other's] behaviors were studied in this manner" (p. 276).

 

2) If the manuscripts is written in English, the last names of two authors is linked with "and" in the text and "&" will be used for the citation in the parentheses. In the case that it is written in Korean, use "Gwa/Wa" for in-text citation, followed by the parentheses without space.

3) One Work by More Than Two Authors and Fewer Than Six Authors: Cite all authors the first time the reference occurs; in subsequent citations include only the surname of the first author followed by “et al.” and the year.

 

First citation:  William, Jones, Smith, Bradner, and Torrington (1983) fount that ....

William, Jones, Smith, Bradner와/및 Torrington(1983)은 학습자의

 

Second citation: William et al. (1983) studied the effect of ...

William 등(1983)은 담화구조의 ...

4) One Work by More Than Six Authors: Cite only the surname of the first author followed by “et al.” and the year in the first and subsequent citations. However, in the reference list, the surnames of all six or more authors should be spelled out.

 

 

5) Works by different authors in the same citation follow their order in the reference list and the authors are separated by a semicolon.

 

Oxford (1986, 1989, 1994) reported that many studies (Gosden, 1992; Hanania & Akhtar, 1985; Hopkins, 1987, 1988a, 1989; Tarone et al., 1981) used strategy training...

 

 

2. Reference List

References cited in manuscript must appear in the reference list and it means that each entry in the reference list must be cited in the manuscript. In the case of the manuscript written in Korean and cited from Korean source, Korean references should be listed first Korean alphabetically before English references. Korean references also should follow the APA style. When the manuscript written in English has Korean sources, give the original title followed by Yale Romanization system and place its translation in brackets. (When you refer an article previously published in the STEM journal, You can use the English title in the abstract.)
